Bookish Discussions: Writing in Books

This weeks topic is: writing in books!  When I see pictures of writing in books, I always want to do it too!  Tell me that doesn’t look cool and sophisticated and shows that ‘worn’ look of a book!

But once I start reading that book that I want to write insightful notes in, I just can’t bring myself to put the pen to paper!  Even a pencil!  It’s just too terrible to mar those beautiful white pages!  And then I read about people who found their great grandparents book collection or something and all their notes in the books tell the family so much about their ancestors.  I want to leave behind that sort of thing.  But writing in my books… ehhhh….

Also, if you write in your books, you can’t ever give them away to someone or sell them again because once a part of you is there, well that’s it.

The only book I have ever written in is a book I bought especially for English class and I won’t read except for that class.  It was still hard to actually highlight things and write things in it (in pencil!) but I managed to do it!

Do any of you write in books?

While we’re sort of on the subject, I’ve actually thought I’d be willing to write in my books if I had a cool pen to do it with.  You know, like those calligraphy pens with the metal point?  I’d love one of those!  Look at how pretty and cool it is!

I would love to learn to write like this!

Please tell me it isn’t just me!

So anyway, back on topic.  I really do wish I had the heart to write in books… but I don’t have that just yet.  Maybe in a few years I’ll buy doubles of all my books and write in those 🙂  A girl can dream.

So tell me, do you write in books?  Have you ever used a calligraphy/fountain pen?

  1. I was in the same situation as you when it came to writing in books. I thought a book looks, like you said cool and sophisticated, when it has writing almost everywhere. But I just can't do it, as much as I want to. I can't write on any of my books, so I would sometimes just buy post-it notes and write on that. I have also wanted to write with a fountain pen, but those pens are expensive. Maybe someday I will buy one. Who knows?Eduardo @ BoomingBooks

  2. Yes! When I try to put the pen (or pencil) to the paper, I just can't do it! That's a good idea to use post-it notes! Haha it's the same money issue with me! I'd rather spend my money on books and things instead of a crazy expensive pen (and I'd want to get a good quality one anyway) so maybe that'll be a long-term saving deal.

  3. No no no! Writing in books looks cool on pictures, but in real life it's just too terrible to do. I mean what if a few years from now I'll decide to re-read the book and I find all those notes that I do not agree with anymore but won't even have enough space to write down my thoughts anymore. Like a horror movie. I've never wanted to write into books but I saw pictures on pinterest where someone highlighted his favorite quotes with a highlighter that had the exact same color as the cover. Now that I found really pretty but I still can't do it, so I totally get what you're saying. Nice post! 🙂

  4. I didn't even think of that… or what if you're reading it later and you think of something big and you don't have the space to write it in the book?? Or if you write in it so much you can't even read it any more?Oooo that's such a good idea although I don't think I could bear to do it… What if it ended up to be the wrong color?? The horror! Thanks 🙂
