50/50 Friday is a meme hosted by Carrie @The Butterfly Reads and I and focuses on the opposite sides of books (best/worst, differing opinions, etc). Every week will have a new topic and several advance topics will be listed in the tab labeled 50/50 Friday!
Today’s Topic: Best/Worst Villain
I really love Queen Levana from The Lunar Chronicles! She’s so evil with a dash of humanity that, while you want to feel sorry for her (Fairest was a wonderful addition!), you also have to admit that she’s a terrible person and does terrible things to her citizens (and people who aren’t her citizens).
While this series does focus more on the romance, I think there was such a missed opportunity to capitalize on the rebels in this series. They could have added some complexity to the story and instead they were used as a vehicle for America and Maxon to be in close quarters together and to provide unrest. They ended up being really faceless and flat. They are developed a little more later in the series but still, not to the extent that they could have been.
Do you agree with me? Who do you think is the best and worst villain? Make a post and link it below!

I agree! Queen Levana is the best villain! She is cruel and evil. Oh yes, the rebels in The Selection weren't really villains were they? They just seemed a bit bland in a way.
Levana is a great villain. You really hate how awful she is but feel the slightest twinge of sympathy for her. Love it. I never read past the first book in The Selection series and you've just confirmed that I shouldn't. If there's nothing more about the rebels than a romance plot device I'm not interested.
Right? And as much as you hate her, you can really relate to her feelings! Yeah, it really disappointed me. While you have to acknowledge that the book is primarily about the love triangle, it would have been really nice to develop the rebels more for a break.
I agree! You can understand her motivations and she's so real. It really puts a face on the idea that no one is really 'evil'. People just have different opinions and different ways of going about things. Yeah, if you didn't like the first book, I don't think you'd like the rest of the series. In my opinion, the first book was the best (and the third was good just because there was a bit more of the rebels and the cuteness was adorable!).
I completely agree with you! I loved how fleshed out Queen Levana is, and how against all odds, I still sympathized with her. The rebels on the other hand are one of the worst antagonists I've read. I think that they were unnecessary to the plot!
For sure! She's such a great villain because of that! For me, I wish they were more pronounced so that there was a little more substance to what otherwise is a trilogy focused entirely on one love-triangle. But you're right, they're stuck in that awkward middle ground where they aren't present enough or are present way too much.
I love your picks! Levana is a great villain – I can admit that, even though I loather her. (Feeling sorry for villains is, let's just say, not my thing. lol) I love the first three Selection novels, BUT THE REBELS WERE RIDICULOUS! Great post! Veronika @ The Regal Critiques
She is! She's so three dimensional and has all sorts of reasons for what she does. I agree with you: the rebels had so much potential! Thanks for stopping by, Veronika!
